I've been holding my breath for weeks, waiting out the animalistic crowds and puffed up prices. December awakens the lowest common denominator in consumerism, so I avoid it altogether, like some sort of self-righteous, protesting hippie.

But no. I shower (semi-regularly) and patchouli makes my eyes itch. I'm as guilty as the rest of ye. I just ask Santa for cash, while letting my shop-lust well up until it explodes all over January.

And what better time to go shopping? It's a new year with new trends, the stores are peaceful and prices plunge - and there's no more ear-scorching Mariah Carey Christmas tunes on repeatrepeatrepeat. The malls are an empty playground.

That's why I offer you my 10 must-have fashion fixes for 2010, part one. Catch the second half of the countdown in next week's column.

10. Dsenyo bags, www.dsenyo.com.

Lafayette artist Marissa Perry Saints founded Dsenyo in 2007 after living in Malawi. Her contemporary African-style bags are made out of low-impact dyes and sustainable fibers, such as hemp and organic cotton. Plus, a portion of the sales goes to community development projects in Africa.

This year, the business is moving production to Malawi, training women there to sew the bags for a fair wage.

My favorite item is the Holiday Hobo bag, $110, featuring a triangle pattern in red with gold metallic accents and a black herringbone hemp trim.

I love my two Hobo bags! There were so many great styles to choose from that I couldn’t pick just one. The Hobo bag is the perfect size to fit everything I need and yet it never feels too heavy or bulky. I feel great wearing my Hobos and knowing that by doing so I am helping empower women in Africa. I have also given friends and family Dsenyo bags as gifts and they love them too! It seems like there is a style and pattern for everyone. Plus, I love how sturdy they are and that they are eco-friendly. When you have one on, you just know that it is designed to last for years.
